Firefox from flathub (the correct UI)

Firefox from fedora repo (windowed) none

Description Nicolas Dufresne 2020-04-17 21:59:29 UTC
Description of problem:

I've been testing and comparing Firefox from fedora (also fedora flatpak, which seems identical so far) against the Firefox build available on flathub.

One issue I notice is that will all the fedora builds the overlay for the mic and camera is a top level window with decoration.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 75

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open https://www.onlinemictest.com/webcam-test/
2. Click play
3. Authorize

Actual results:

A top level window is shown somewhere top left

Expected results:

A centerd overlay is suppose to be display.

Additional info:

This work with flathub flatpak. First I believe it was Wayland vs X11, so I started the X11 version and it has the same issue.

Can you please catch screenshot with the issue?
Thanks.

Comment 2 Martin Stransky 2020-04-22 07:59:37 UTC
Also can you try firefox-x11 package?

Fore some reason, just using the non-wayland .desktop show that same issue, but you are right that this is Wayland specific, as doing:

WAYLAND_DISPLAY= firefox

Display the right behaviour (but performance seems really bad, I don't think the flathub one was that slow).

It's because it's running under Wayland where such panel window is not supported so we need to emulate it by a regular toplevel window.

It's far from ideal. A better approach could be to use a subsurface, and place that center top of the Firefox windows, so at least when the window is maximized (for most people it is) it will be located properly. And if you get out of the window, well, you don't see it anymore, but then you can say that this is a non-wayland use case.

I just think long term, it's the OS that should take care. To make an analogy, I think the way screen casting is integrated in gnome-shell on wayland is the right way. It's the "OS" that allow or not the access, and the OS place a indication that screen casting is active. WebCam and Microphone should work exactly the same way.

Sure, I agree with you. But as usual there's too much fixes waiting to be worked out so we need to focus to more pressing issues now.

Comment 9 Fedora Program Management 2021-04-29 16:18:41 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 32 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 32 on 2021-05-25.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '32'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 32 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 10 Ben Cotton 2021-05-25 15:58:09 UTC
Fedora 32 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-05-25. Fedora 32 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
