Description William Giokas 2015-01-06 22:25:30 UTC
Description of problem:

The systemd package is version 216-13.fc21, however when I type systemctl --version it reports 'systemd 217'.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
systemd 216-13.fc21

How reproducible:
Easily reproducible

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install systemd
2. run 'rpm -qi systemd' to see the version reported as 216-13
3. run 'systemctl --version' to see the version there reported as 217

Actual results:
systemctl --version reports 217

Expected results:
systemctl --version reports 216

Additional info:
Probably a patch that changes the version reporting somewhere.

Comment 1 Jan Synacek 2015-01-07 07:22:04 UTC
AFAIK that's because it's the version 217 with a few patches removed, instead of version 216 with a ton of patches added. Makes packaging easier. I don't think that this is something that has to be fixed... But I agree that it can be somewhat confusing if anyone actually uses --version.

Comment 2 William Giokas 2015-01-07 09:26:03 UTC
But shouldn't the package version be the same as the reported version? It just doesn't make any sense to me that those numbers are different. One of them really should be changed, whether it's releasing 217-1.fc21 or creating a tiny patch for systemd to use when packaging, they should both report the same thing.

Comment 3 Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 2015-01-07 13:07:07 UTC
Yeah, I screwed up the numbering, sorry.

Jan, I was thinking of doing a bigger update with some more patches. Maybe we could bump the version (to 217) then?

Comment 4 Jan Synacek 2015-01-07 14:45:09 UTC
Ok, agreed. I have one additional patch in the works as well (bug 1171719). Go ahead and make your changes, I'll follow up with my patch (in case it's not there yet;)).
