Passenger 5 has a lot of nice new features:
* HTTP JSON API for command and control of the app server[1]
* Simple standalone server for those who don't want nginx/apache to go with it[1]
* Improved granular logging and web socket support[2]

The only caveat is that support for Rails <2.3 has been dropped[2].
