Description Allison Karlitskaya 2021-04-13 21:46:10 UTC
Description of problem:

The samba-client package contains a perl script called /usr/bin/findsmb. It's the only thing that uses perl in the entire package, and it seems not to be used by anything else in the package.

It might be possible to port this script to pure shell, but after beginning an attempt to do so, I feel like this might be a bit of a wasted effort. The script seems to contain a few bugs, and I'm not sure if anyone is even using it anymore.

Removing this one script (or splitting it to a separate package, or rewriting it) would allow samba-client to no longer depend on perl. This is one of only three packages in the Fedora 34 Silverblue workstation image which still needs perl.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

samba-client-4.14.2-0.fc34.x86_64

Comment 1 Andreas Schneider 2021-04-14 05:49:51 UTC
I think the script is still in use, however we should port it to python as that is one of the main samba languages.

Comment 2 Allison Karlitskaya 2021-04-14 07:29:38 UTC
Would you like to do that, or should I try to find some time?

Comment 3 Andreas Schneider 2021-04-19 07:18:13 UTC
I've asked on samba mailing lists if someone still uses the script. Nobody responded so lets drop it ...
