RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Richard W.M. Jones 2015-02-09 11:59:29 UTC
Description of problem:

Currently we only support Windows <= 7.

In theory we should be able to support later versions of Windows,
and we have virtio-win drivers for later versions, but when both
I tried it and QA tried it, it didn't work.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

libguestfs 1.28.1

How reproducible:

100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to convert any Windows > 7 guest.

Additional info:

The was previously a rather long, rambling bug about this:

I've reverted this commit (starting from libguestfs-1.28.1-1.40.el7)
and postponed the feature to RHEL 7.3.

Comment 10 Richard W.M. Jones 2015-07-07 14:13:37 UTC
For reference, the following patch was added to RHEL 7.2
so virt-v2v will refuse to convert any Windows > 7.

Is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard still not supported for the conversion?
Will it be soon as well as Windows 8 and 10?

I am running libvirt and virt-v2v on a CentOS system. Will I just need to run an update command or do I need to create a new repository on my system?

Is there an approximate date for rhel7.3 release?
We are in the middle of a huge migration project and time is key.

Many thanks!

Comment 15 Richard W.M. Jones 2015-11-04 16:59:52 UTC
RHEL 7.2 is going to be released this month.

RHEL minor releases usually happen approx every 6 months.

There is a RHEL 7.3 preview repo available (not actually up to date
at the moment). See:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2015-September/msg00079.html

Windows conversions are complicated. In Windows > 7, the method
Microsoft uses to install drivers completely changed. So there's
a risk to using the new, mostly untested code.

Comment 16 Alessandro 2015-11-04 21:29:06 UTC
So, is 7.2 going to support 2012 or 8 and 10?
Would it be of help if I install and run a test using the preview repo to speed up the 7.3 version to be stable?

Comment 17 Richard W.M. Jones 2015-11-04 21:31:48 UTC
RHEL 7.2 supports Windows <= 7.

RHEL 7.3 *may* support later versions of Windows, if we get enough
time to test the current bug. The code is upstream and in recent
Fedora, so you can test it yourself, but keep backups.

Comment 18 Alessandro 2015-11-04 21:51:25 UTC
Ok, thanks Richard!
I will clone my current environment and test 7.3.
Where do you want me to post eventual bugs for you to review?

The patch for Windows > 7 is not included in the previews yet.
Please see comment 17.

Comment 23 Alessandro 2015-11-13 19:29:09 UTC
Thank you, Richard.
Is there a link where I can check when the patch and final version will be released?

Regards

Comment 24 Richard W.M. Jones 2015-11-13 21:49:19 UTC
Yes, this bug will be updated when a package is available.

Comment 25 Alessandro 2015-11-13 22:03:21 UTC
Thank you!

Comment 48 Richard W.M. Jones 2016-02-09 14:47:01 UTC
There is zero chance of this in 7.2.z.

Comment 49 Alessandro 2016-02-13 23:31:37 UTC
Any chance of Windows > 7 supported in version 7.3 any time soon?

Comment 50 Richard W.M. Jones 2016-02-14 11:01:54 UTC
Please try the preview packages which can perform Windows > 7
conversions. They are not supported at the moment, and no final
decision has been made about RHEL 7.3.

For downstream build virt-v2v-1.32.2-3.el7.x86_64,in ovf file and rhevm GUI,the descrption field still shows something like:
generated by virt-v2v 1.32.2rhel=7,release=3.el7,libvirt

btw,QE are testing convert Windows > 7 using virt-v2v-1.32.2-3.el7.x86_64 and will add comments about the results later.

Hi,Richard

I saw fix of this bug has already in virt-v2v-1.32.2-3.el7.x86_64,need it be added in erratum?

Comment 55 Richard W.M. Jones 2016-02-18 10:30:22 UTC
Yes, I will add it shortly.

Comment 56 Richard W.M. Jones 2016-02-18 10:32:31 UTC
Erm, NO, actually. I'm not dev-acking this bug until it has
received much more testing.

Comment 57 mxie@redhat.com 2016-02-23 09:29:00 UTC
Tested with:
libguestfs-1.32.2-6.el7.x86_64
virt-v2v-1.32.2-6.el7.x86_64
virtio-win-1.8.0-4.el7.noarch
libguestfs-winsupport-7.1-4.el7.x86_64

Test conversion win8,win8.1,win2012,win2012R2,win10 from xen/esx.

win8 from xen:
# virt-v2v -ic xen+ssh://10.66.106.64 -b virbr0 xen-hvm-win8-i386 -of qcow2
# virt-v2v -ic xen+ssh://10.66.106.64 -b virbr0 xen-hvm-win8-x86_64 -of qcow2

win8.1x86,win10x86 from esx5.5:
# virt-v2v -ic vpx://root.4.103/tzheng-demo/10.66.106.63/?no_verify=1 -b virbr0 esx5.5-win8.1-i386 -of raw --password-file /tmp/passwd

Sorry forget to modify libguestfs-winsupport version at comment57, correct as libguestfs-winsupport-7.2-1.el7.x86_64

Hi Richard,

I've reviewed your commit https://github.com/libguestfs/libguestfs/commit/2817824bd34e30fe6a2eeb65105067bd058f1fac

As far as I see you use pre-calculated hash c86329aaeb0a7904 to add virtio driver to DriverStore.
The method works for one Windows driver version only - one that hash sum is calculated for.
The hash calculation based on *.inf file that is subject to change over VirtIo versions. It implies Windows won't convert with the newer driver versions (if inf's are changed).

Based on Windows libraries disassembly I've got an algorithm to calculate the hash for arbitrary driver *.inf.

I'll gladly share the know-how with the community. What is the way to contribute \ suggest a patch?

Thanks ;)
