Description Raman Gupta 2016-03-21 17:34:58 UTC
Description of problem:

I am using pidgin indicator 0.9.1.fc23 on plasma workspace 5.5.5.4.fc23.

When I left-click on the pidgin indicator icon, it does nothing. Middle-click brings up the buddy tray, which is what I would expect left-click to do (which is the same behavior as the original systray icon that does not work well in KDE5). Right-click brings up the menu as expected.

According to the author of the indicator icon, there is nothing he can do because it is up to plasma-workspace to decide what happens on left click / etc.

How can we get the left click to do the expected action of bringing up the buddy tray?

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

5.5.5.4.fc23

I also have the following libappindicator libs installed:

libappindicator-12.10.0-10.fc23.x86_64
libappindicator-sharp-12.10.0-10.fc23.x86_64
libappindicator-gtk3-12.10.0-10.fc23.x86_64

How reproducible:

Every time.

And,

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354651

with recent'ish commit:
http://commits.kde.org/plasma-workspace/1390b40b399770e7a67da714c74d172eee1bb433

I check to see if our builds include that or not.

Thanks, not sure how I missed those when I searched.

That bug doesn't seem to refer to the same problem.

and... they do.

And, now I find:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360332

Looks like this *may* be fixed in plasma-5.6 coming soon.

Ok, but pidgin-indicator plugin does not use xembedsniproxy, but libappindicator. So the "correct" solution in 5.6 will be to dump pidgin-indicator and go back to the xembed-sniproxy-based "regular" tray icon?

What is the longer term post-xembed solution for apps?

Thanks Rex!

> What is the longer term post-xembed solution for apps?

For libappindicator indicators, shouldn't plasma just default to opening an app on left-click if it provides a window?

Comment 8 Rex Dieter 2016-03-21 18:44:33 UTC
bug #360332 was about StatusNotifier support, not xembed, but apparently only tracked a regression in upstream master/ branch, that soon became plasma-5.6 release. So, not directly related here. That said, the rework in the related code may still help here.

As far as "longer term post-xembed solutions"... the answers are the same as always: use something *not* xembed based, either no systray at all or something that supports newer StatusNotifier spec (or some other/better idea)

"For libappindicator indicators, shouldn't plasma..." I don't know, but probably a good question for kde.org upstream, either on plasma mailing list,
https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/plasma-devel
or in a bug @ bugs.kde.org

A KDE developer on the plasma-devel mailing list thinks this bug is the root cause and asks to test the attached patch:

Comment 11 Rex Dieter 2016-03-22 17:45:29 UTC
Thanks, will try it out the patch @

Unfortunately, the patch did not work. Left-clicks on the notification icon are still not doing anything.

To be sure, you tested kf5-knotifications-5.20.0-2 ?

Yup, it didn't come in via dnf so I installed it directly from Koji:

# rpm -q --info kf5-knotifications | head -3
Name : kf5-knotifications
Version : 5.20.0
Release : 2.fc23

Comment 20 Rex Dieter 2016-03-23 16:23:48 UTC
OK, wierd, testing this on f23, when I run pidgin I'm getting *2* systray icons, one is apparently the old/classic one *and* an indicator.

left click on indicator doesn't do anything, but left clicking on the other one does.

Yeah, you're seeing the built-in indicator in Pidgin along with the notifier provided by pidgin-indicator. The problem with the built-in indicator is that it is xembed based. You can turn it off in Preferences/Interface/Show system tray icon.

Left-clicking on the xembed indicator works, but clicking on the libappindicator icon does not.

Comment 22 Rex Dieter 2016-03-23 16:59:53 UTC
Ah, thanks for the explanation. I guess I naively assumed the indicator would auto-disable the classic/xembed one.

That is certainly be a reasonable assumption :-)

Comment 26 Fedora End Of Life 2016-11-24 16:10:43 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '23'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 23 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 27 Raman Gupta 2016-11-24 16:26:22 UTC
Still a problem on Fedora 24.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 24 is nearing its end of life.

Comment 29 Fedora End Of Life 2017-08-08 14:00:47 UTC
Fedora 24 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-08-08. Fedora 24 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 30 Jan Kurik 2017-08-15 09:48:17 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 27 development cycle.
Changing version to '27'.

More information and reason for this action is here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/27/HouseKeeping#Rawhide_Rebase

Comment 31 Rex Dieter 2017-08-15 12:57:28 UTC
Ideally, this should get filed upstream @ bugs.kde.org somewhere, they may not even be aware of it (without this issue being documented officially).

Comment 32 Raman Gupta 2018-08-07 16:08:32 UTC
KDE Plasma 5.12.6, KDE Frameworks 5.47.0, QT 5.9.6, left click now seems to do the same thing as right-click (it opens the menu). That seems odd but at least it does *something* now.
