French patch

Hello,
the french translation of pulseaudio hasn't been updated in years.
It is missing some strings and has some typos and mistakes (apparently some of the english text has been rearranged or modified).

I have made a patch, but I don't know where to send it.
Since the last modification was from the fedora fr team, I'll try here.

Feel free to review it and use it.

Best regards.

Hi,

If you want to contribute to the translation of Fedora, please check:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N_French_Team

We will be glad if you can fix the mistakes you're talking about directly on Zanata ;)

Cheers

Comment 3 slatchurie 2017-05-09 19:40:58 UTC
Hello,
actually I have checked the translation on Zanata and the only mistake I have spotted is "Headphones" which should be translated to "Casque audio" or "Casque" instead of "Casques analogiques" (there was "Analog headphones" some years ago but it has been deleted, and the plural is wrong).
I am not sure if I want to join a translation team just for this.

Now, it seems there is a bigger issue. This translation is more up to date than the one I have found on the github repo of pulseaudio.

It seems your translations aren't forwarded to the pulseaudio project.

Here is the header of the .po file I have found on Zanata :

    # Robert-André Mauchin <zebob.m>, 2008.
    # Michaël Ughetto <telimektar esraonline com>, 2008.
    # Pablo Martin-Gomez <pablo.martin-gomez>, 2008.

I corrected the mistake, thanks for underlining it.

Ok so here is the thing: the translations on Zanata are done by members of Fedora, but not specifically for Fedora. Each traduction has to be pulled by each project.

In that perspective, you want to report a bug against pulseaudio and ask them to pull the translations from Zanata. It will then be incorporated in the next version, which will then be packaged by Fedora.

It's a little bit cumbersome, but it is unfortunately the way it is.

Comment 5 slatchurie 2017-05-11 15:52:04 UTC
Thanks.

I have sent your .po file to pulseaudio's bugzilla.

Comment 6 Edouard Duliège 2017-05-12 08:10:33 UTC
Thank you very much!

Hi, an upstream pulseaudio developer here. I was not aware of the existence of Zanata until slatchurie submitted the translation update to our bugzilla. It sounds like Fedora folks are writing translations, but they aren't being used, because nobody is forwarding the translations to upstream.

It seems weird to me to add projects to fedora.zanata.org without also setting up a process for forwarding the translations to upstream. Is this a common practice, or just a mistake that was made only with pulseaudio?

Surprising indeed, because we are loosing useful contribution (and wasting some time...)!

It looks like it was known by the Fedora community in September 2013 when Fedora had to use Zanata:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/trans@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/SFUBB3RLK7LGY2KY4JCNXHWUGL5DBNZX/

Let's ask the current maintainer. Btw, last update was 27/06/16 12:08 by wtaymans.

Anyway, it may be the right moment to set-up a connection from a translation platform with your tool?

Here I can read why you left Transifex: https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/Community/

Lennart Poettering said in this thread it was a problem with the way the commits where handled:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2012-February/163023.html

Please have a look at Zanata's documentation to see if it suits you. Or have a look to alternatives like Weblate - http://hosted.weblate.org/ (or http://pootle.translatehouse.org/ and https://pontoon.mozilla.org/, but I am unsure there is a public hosting).

Our tool? Do you mean our project? Yes, every moment is the right moment to improve the translation workflow :)

It would be desirable to get commits/patches from the translation system with the translator being credited in the commit's author field. If I understood correctly, the lack of this was Lennart's complaint about Transifex, and based on reading some of Zanata's documentation, Zanata doesn't seem better in this regard. Weblate looks like it might be a good fit. Thanks for the suggestion!

I believe PulseAudio was added to fedora.zanata.org to allow updating translations specifically for RHEL, and it has nothing to do with upstream.

Comment 11 Fedora End Of Life 2018-02-20 15:32:29 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 28 development cycle.
Changing version to '28'.

Comment 12 noriko 2018-02-22 08:17:57 UTC
Due to transifex no longer opensource, in 2014, Fedora Localization Project moved their platform from Transifex to Zanata with agreement from majority of the languages teams, obtaining consensus from FESCO, see [1].

PulseAudio package also was contacted, and the maintainer (Wym) decided to move to Zanata, see [2].

Therefore, since then, all translators of FLP are expecting PulseAudio team to push and pull the translation from/to Zanata.

If any problem, feel free to contact. I am happy to help or grab someone from Zanata to help you. We really would like to see this bug to be fixed within F28.

I’m afraid Zanata has never been used by PulseAudio for that purpose, and current maintainers most likely don’t even know about it.

PulseAudio has also never been a part of Fedora — it’s an independent project, hosted on freedesktop.org.

Comment 15 noriko 2018-02-25 03:48:15 UTC
Piotr, thank you.
According to your comment 10, we should re-name "PulseAudio" project in Zanata to "PulseAudio (RHEL)".

Comment 16 noriko 2018-08-10 14:01:19 UTC
This is upstream and beyond fedora l10n. I will close as won't fix (to be honest can't fix). Please feel free to re-open by changing Product, or file appropriate place again.
