Description Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-04 23:24:43 UTC
Description of problem:

install from spin for MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-Rawhide to either real hardware or vm to GUI (which is this case is MATE) does not work when booted. Likewise previously existing installs from rawhide from after the fedora 29 GA break in similar way after being updated.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

rawhide/f30.

How reproducible:

100% on new installs. about 75% after updates to existing installs. Interestingly I have one bare metal install and one vm install that worked after initial install and still worked after being updated. However multiple attempted VM installs and at least one bare metal install all fail.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.download .iso for mate-compiz and install new bare metal machine or new vm.
2.reboot the new installed machine.

Actual results:

some kind of Xorg or lightdm issue. screen blinks over and over continuously. also alternate consoles (ctrl-shift-f2 etc...) do not work. If booted into init 2 or 3 consoles do work.

Additional info:

Installs using the rawhide compiz-mate iso from shortly (2 wks?) after f29 GA seem to continue to work fine even after being updated. At least one bare metal install that initially worked became broken after being updated. Any new install using .iso from last 3 wks or so seem to not work after the initial install.

perhaps this is lightdm issue instead of mate. have not been able to figure that out. maybe this is related to lightdm autologin but have not been to confirm that.

have not tried any spins other than mate.

Comment 1 Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-12 00:48:13 UTC
Installs of new bare metal or vms from various rawhide spin isos do not work when booted with default arguments. This includes mate, xfce, kde, and probably all the others. installation with all default setup from anaconda. It surprises me greatly that no one else seems to have reported this......

Comment 2 Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 2019-01-12 08:26:26 UTC
You don't even provide the version of the installation ISO you tried, what are they? Please specify which variants you tried apart from MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-Rawhide. On the installations that you were updating, what packages were in the update that caused the installation to break?

Comment 3 Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-12 13:30:55 UTC
From my previous comments in the bug I thought it would be apparent that this has been happening for more than a month (maybe 6 wks). The latest .iso's I tried were:
Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-Rawhide-20190108.n.0.iso
Fedora-Xfce-Live-x86_64-Rawhide-20190108.n.0.iso
also a recent kde iso.
I do not see what is so special about anything I am doing (not changing anything from defaults while in anaconda etc...). I do create one user with a password and with admin while in anaconda. So I would think they are not working for anyone and should be easy to reproduce. There were no errors reported during these installs. I have not seen anything obvious is error logs of the installed machines.

Comment 4 Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-12 13:32:51 UTC
I did have machines that broke during an update but that was wks ago and I have since muked them. It was not clear what made them break. However at this point no updates are required. It just happens 100% after an initial IPL with these spins.

Comment 5 Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 2019-01-12 15:52:48 UTC
For the next time: please provide more details. Saying "everything is broken for the last few weeks" is not really actionable. In this particular case, switching to another console using alt-f3 and running 'systemctl --failed' quickly yields the information that lightdm.service failed to start with the message "cannot autolaunch d-bus without x11 $DISPLAY" which is much easier to act upon.

Anyway, should be fixed with the next compose. Seems to be similar to #1662168 but without the crash.

Comment 6 Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-12 17:29:56 UTC
after looking at bz-1662168 I guessed that disabling selinux might make this go away. What comes out on the display is different (for example the rhgb stuff no longer seemed to show up at all and I just got a blank screen at that point) it was still not successfull. Should I have expected that disabling selinux would make this go away?

I included output from systemd-failed and logs from lightdm and Xorg.

output from systemd-failed shows:

 UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
● lightdm.service loaded failed failed Light Display Manager
● lm_sensors.service loaded failed failed Hardware Monitoring Sensors
● vboxservice.service loaded failed failed VirtualBox guest services

LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.

3 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.

Comment 7 Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek 2019-01-12 19:21:47 UTC
No, this is not related to selinux at all. The problem is that systemd stopped setting the DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS environment variable because all dbus implementations in use don't need it and default to /run/user/<uid>/bus. But it turns out that other programs need the variable to be present. This change has been reverted in the latest builds of systemd.

Comment 8 Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-15 01:21:34 UTC
recent updates made available today which included systemd-240-4.gitf02b547.fc30.x86_64.rpm etal. did not resolve this issue. I updated an existing installation made from Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-Rawhide-20190108.n.0.iso.

a new installation using Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-Rawhide-20190114.n.0.iso did NOT resolve this issue.

There is something else dbus related going on. On one machine xfce works with a couple of warnings on another it gets connection refused connecting to /run/users/1000/dbus . lxdm is a lot less fussy about dbus problems and can be used as a work around for me. I don't think this is directly related to the change from dbus-daemon to dbus-broker as dbus-broker is running. Access rights to that path seem to look OK. I haven't figured out why one machine works and the other doesn't.

Is it still believed that this is likely to be a systemd issue? I am assuming that systemd-240-4.gitf02b547.fc30 would have included the changes mentioned above in systemd-240-3.gitf02b547.fc30. Is that correct? Should this bug no longer claim that systemd-240-3.gitf02b547.fc30 has a fix for this?

btw, systemctl --failed still shows lightdm as having failed. i included the seat0-greeter.log below. It seems to show slick-greeter terminating due to an error:

Comment 12 Kevin Paetzold 2019-01-16 16:08:28 UTC
updates taken today seem to have made this issue resolved or to go away.
perhaps, lightdm-1.28.0-3.fc30.x86_64 or dbus-broker-17-3.fc30.x86_64

I expect that Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-Rawhide-20190115.n.0.iso will also mae this issue resolve or to go away.
I will update this bug if that is not correct. Otherwise I will go away :-)

If it's fixed, then it's probably the same as 1663040. Let's mark it as dup.
