Description Lumír Balhar 2019-08-06 12:44:22 UTC
Python 2.7 will reach end-of-life in January 2020, over 9 years after it was released. This falls within the Fedora 31 lifetime.
Packages that depend on Python 2 are being switched to Python 3 or removed from Fedora: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/F31_Mass_Python_2_Package_Removal#Information_on_Remaining_Packages
Python 2 will be retired in Fedora 32: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/RetirePython2

To help planning, we'd like to know the plans for percona-xtrabackup's future. Specifically:

- What is the reason for the Python2 dependency? (Is it software written in Python, or does it just provide Python bindings, or use Python in the build system or test runner?)

- What are the upstream/community plans/timelines regarding Python 3?

- What is the guidance for porting to Python 3? (Assuming that there is someone who generally knows how to port to Python 3, but doesn't know anything about the particular package, what are the next steps to take?)

This bug is filed semi-automatically, and might not have all the context specific to percona-xtrabackup.
If you need anything from us, or something is unclear, please mention it here.

Thank you.

According to the procedure described in https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/F31_Mass_Python_2_Package_Removal#Information_on_Remaining_Packages the package was now orphaned. If you think it was a mistake, you can provide the answers and claim the package back.

Let us know if you need any help or just need more time.

Comment 8 Pete MacKinnon 2019-09-11 14:09:31 UTC
Python 2 dependency was removed in rawhide and F31 afaict. No need to orphan.

Comment 9 Lumír Balhar 2019-09-12 05:10:13 UTC
It was not. percona-xtrabackup-test-2.3.6-15.fc31.x86_64.rpm still depends on Python 2.

You can, of course, claim the package back. Next time, please respond sooner before the package gets orphaned due to your inactivity.

Comment 10 Carl George 2019-09-23 15:07:07 UTC
Pete, are you going to claim the package? It is currently an orphan. If you don't I'm going to grab it because one of my packages depends on it.

Comment 11 Lumír Balhar 2019-10-02 06:39:27 UTC
This package is still an orphan and will be automatically retired. If you claim it, don't forget to answer the questions.

percona-xtrabackup-test contains 61 *.py files and some of them have Python 2 in shebang so the dependency on Python 2 might be automatically generated.

Comment 12 Carl George 2019-10-02 20:42:47 UTC
Since Pete doesn't seem interested in responding, I've requested to adopt this package. Please don't retire it Lumír, I'll get it fixed up after I get commit access.

FEDORA-2019-ba62d9e1f1 has been submitted as an update to Fedora 31. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2019-ba62d9e1f1

Comment 14 Pete MacKinnon 2019-10-04 15:56:26 UTC
I've been on PTO. Before that I did actually try to remove the explicit py2 shebang refs but was shut down the by fed git webhook for orphaned packages. But more than happy to have Carl take over the package.
