Description Brandon Nielsen 2021-02-03 20:55:20 UTC
Description of problem: After install, Gnome session fails to start with an "Oops, something went wrong" message. Initial setup eventually appears and continues as normal. Subsequent boots function normally.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Compose 20210203, but Workstation Live x86_64[0] and Workstation aarch64[1].

How reproducible: Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora (I tested both Workstation Live installed on x86_64, and arm-image-installer for aarch64)
2. Boot
3. Observe "Oops, something went wrong"

Actual results: System boots with a fullscreen "Oops, something went wrong", eventually recovers.

Expected results: System boots cleanly, displaying the Gnome initial setup as per normal with no additional error message.

Additional info: I will attach logs from both the Live boot, post installation, and the aarch64 boot (from a Raspberry Pi 3b+). The only suspicious common thing between them is "gnome-session-binary[923]: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings.desktop".

Comment 3 Ben Cotton 2021-02-09 16:03:37 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 34 development cycle.
Changing version to 34.

Comment 4 Brandon Nielsen 2021-02-19 17:32:53 UTC
Still seeing this with 20210219.n.0 compose[0], for both x86_64 and aarch64.

Comment 5 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2021-02-22 14:32:18 UTC
Proposed as a Freeze Exception for 34-beta by Fedora user tablepc using the blocker tracking app because:

Though this seems cosmetic since the install can be completed, it sends a bad message to the one doing the installation that the Beta is broken as installed.

Comment 6 pmkellly 2021-02-22 14:55:41 UTC
I understand this probably needs a new criteria for Freeze Exception. However, I don't really think we what to present such serious and apparently unwarranted messages.

Comment 7 Geoffrey Marr 2021-02-22 20:13:03 UTC
Discussed during the 2021-02-22 blocker review meeting: [0]

The decision to classify this bug as an "AcceptedFreezeException (Beta)" was made as this doesn't prevent anything working in the end, but looks very bad as a first impression.

Comment 9 Lukas Ruzicka 2021-03-10 16:32:32 UTC
I am seeing this, too. When Gnome-Initial-Setup has run, the issue disappears.

Comment 10 Chris Murphy 2021-03-10 23:55:26 UTC
See also bug 1933455, could be a dup.

"The only suspicious common thing between them is "gnome-session-binary[923]: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings.desktop".

that definitely looks like the proximate cause, to me. along with the previous message:

Feb 03 10:25:55 fedora gnome-session[923]: gnome-session-binary[923]: WARNING: Application 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings.desktop' failed to register before timeout

note that not a whole lot happens for a whole minute, there:

Feb 03 10:25:55 fedora gnome-session-binary[923]: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings.desktop

so yeah, it seems like basically we sit around for a minute waiting on XSettings.desktop to do...something...and then give up, and at that point we show the 'something has gone wrong' screen but still go ahead and run g-i-s?

Comment 12 Adam Williamson 2021-03-11 05:09:51 UTC
/usr/lib/systemd/user/gnome-session.d/session.conf has Wants=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings.target , which seems questionable if it's only meant to be run in X sessions (as is suggested by the fact that it's only part of gnome-session-x11-services.target , not gnome-session-wayland-services.target). Still, that doesn't seem to be exactly new, it's been the case since fc0aff2d99818eb0c3a13e7ff253ba8bd5e424cb which is dated Sat Dec 14 10:20:39 2019 +0100, so you would think it would've been in F33. Indeed F33 had gnome-initial-setup 3.38.0, and if I look at the 3.38.0 tag in g-i-s git, it has:

[adamw@xps13k gnome-initial-setup ((3.38.0))]$ grep -R XSett
data/gnome-initial-setup.session.conf:Wants=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings.target
data/gnome-initial-setup.session:RequiredComponents=org.gnome.Shell;gnome-initial-setup;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.A11ySettings;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Color;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Datetime;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Housekeeping;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Keyboard;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.MediaKeys;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.PrintNotifications;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Rfkill;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.ScreensaverProxy;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Sharing;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Smartcard;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Sound;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.UsbProtection;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Wacom;org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XSettings;

so that doesn't seem to be the *whole* story here. I guess I'll run an F33 install and see if I can see what happens in that.

Comment 13 Adam Williamson 2021-03-11 05:43:48 UTC
Looking at F33 while g-i-s is running, it seems like gsd-xsettings actually managed to run, even though X isn't running. I see a running /usr/libexec/gsd-xsettings process. So I guess the difference is there - in F33 it can start up and let the session proceed even when it's a Wayland session, in F34 it can't?

Comment 14 Adam Williamson 2021-03-11 05:57:46 UTC
hmm, or no, in the f34 case, it's actually running too. yet we still get the delay and error.

for one thing, it seems to hit a lot of selinux denials with selinux enforcing on. with it off, we get rather interesting behaviour. we still get the long delay and the unrecoverable failure message - then *one second* after that, gsd-xsettings seems to 'wake up' and start logging a ton of stuff. In particular this line:

interests me, and I wonder if it could be related...

Copying my comment from bug 1933455.

The two bugs are definitely the same issue.

It boils down to:
 1. We are hitting the non-systemd startup path, as this is a "login" screen (otherwise multiseat would be completely broken)
 2. The gnome-initial-setup session pulls in Xsettings
 3. gnome-shell messes up and has the wrong impression it'll be able to auto-start Xwayland
 4. gsd-xsettings tries to connect to Xwayland, but just waits in queue as it isn't started

This is identical to https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-session/-/issues/79

My proposed solution was that mutter (or gnome-shell?) detect the non-systemd case by running sd_pid_get_user_unit (logind places these type of sessions into session-X.scope units, which are not part of the "user" manager and as such the function just returns an error).

Assigning to mutter as that's where the proposed fix is.

Comment 18 Chris Murphy 2021-03-11 18:29:22 UTC
Beta RC1 has mutter-40.0~beta-2.fc34.x86_64, so we need a new mutter to fix this in the next RC.

Comment 19 Adam Williamson 2021-03-11 18:34:03 UTC
Benjamin says they're actually likely to just fix this in g-i-s by removing the app from the session definition, instead. So let's assign it back there.

Comment 20 Benjamin Berg 2021-03-11 18:40:26 UTC
There is still some confusion on how to best work around the problem (and an issue with the g-i-s approach has been identified).

Let's leave it as is for now, I'll reassign it once we know more. But we might go back to a mutter based fix, or in the extreme case patches for both GDM and g-i-s.

From today's Go/No-Go meeting:

RejectedBlocker(Beta) - This bug does not violate any release criteria, but we should develop a criterion to address it prior to F34 Final

Comment 22 Adam Williamson 2021-03-12 18:07:08 UTC
So I'm holding off on requesting an RC2 compose because I really want to have this fixed in it. But it'd be nice to do it today so we have the compose for testing over the weekend. Will it be possible to come up with something by end of day? Thanks!

Discussed during the 2021-03-15 blocker review meeting: [0]

The decision to delay the classification of this as a blocker bug was made as this isn't a completely clear call, and the fix is verified in Beta, so we will just punt to avoid having to think too hard about it.
