`akonadictl start` fails. It appears because it expects the database to use InnoDB and MariaDB doesn't know what it's talking about:

Upstream lists some innodb-related changes between versions 10.4 (F33, works) and 10.5 (F34, broken):

It's not clear to me if that's relevant. The MariaDB 10.5 Change proposal does not explicitly mention anything innodb-related: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/MariaDB_10.5

This appears to be an upgrade issue. Moving `~/.config/share/akonadi` and running `akonadictl start` allows akonadi to launch successfully. It also works fine from a new F34 install.

Curiously, the contents of `~/.config/share/akonadi/mysql.conf` are identical between the old and newly-created directories.

It doesn't look like a change to the InnoDB support. It looks like the Akonadi database instance didn't shut down cleanly before or during the upgrade, so now it's dirty and MariaDB is refusing to replay the redo log because of the version change. That error prevents the InnoDB engine from loading, resulting in the "Unknown/unsupported storage engine" error.

That sounds right. I renamed the ib log file in .local/share/akonadi/db_data, set innodb_force_recovery=1 in
.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf, and  started MariaDB through akonadictl. I then ran mysql_upgrade with the socket
that akonadictl opened, and akonadi seems completely happy now.

I also hit this after upgrading F33→F34. Checking ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/mysql.err.old revealed that the DB shutdown before the upgrade was unclean:

Before the upgrade, I normally logged out from Plasma, logged in as root on tty and ran dnf system-upgrade download+reboot there, so there was really no good reason for the DB not to exit cleanly. Looking further back in my mysql.err.old revealed shockingly many unclean shutdowns. It looks like something is hard-killing mysqld before it manages to finish the whole shutdown sequence (which takes just a few seconds at most). Perhaps systemd or something is cleaning up leftover processes a bit too early or something. This is a separate bug that needs further investigation.

Anyway, so InnoDB managed to recover from unclean shutdown dozens of times on F33, but the 10.5 version on F34 doesn't know how to read the redo log written by 10.4 due to a format change, so it is absolutely crucial to shut down 10.4 cleanly before the upgrade. Of course one could try to just nuke the log as suggested in Comment #3 and hope for the best, but given that the redo log was truly dirty (or 10.5 would have started normally), there will be some data loss. It might be completely inconsequential (perhaps all the changes in the log were already written to the main data file and only a commit record was missing, or the only uncommitted change was a message getting marked as read) or it might lead to major corruption of the database and render it unusable. There's no way to be sure in advance, so I certainly wouldn't recommend trying that approach.

Instead, a clean way to recover is to temporarily downgrade to 10.4, recover the log, shutdown cleanly and upgrade back to 10.5:

1. $ akonadictl stop
2. # dnf module switch-to mariadb:10.4
3. $ akonadictl start
4. $ akonadictl stop

5. Now check ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/mysql.err to confirm the database shut down cleanly:

After this, MariaDB 10.5 will do the necessary modifications to the log and start up cleanly, as shown in mysql.err:

Note that if the affected machine also uses MariaDB for other purposes than just the Akonadi database (such as a standalone SQL server instance), you should consider stopping all such instances before attempting the downgrade to 10.4. It shouldn't be strictly necessary (10.4 will refuse to start with data that was already upgraded to 10.5), but it certainly won't hurt.

Hit the nail on the head.  So there's 2 issues (at least):

1.  akonadi'd db shutdown is unclean sometimes (arguably too often).  Sometimes there's little to do if users experience session crashes.

2.  If (1) occurs for the last akonadi shutdown prior to f33->f34 upgrade, then manual process to fix things is required.

This bug is mostly about item 2.  comments 3 and 4 give a general outline of how to do the fixing, and I only know enough maria/mysql-fu to be dangerous... will likely need some input from maria db maintainer(s) (or any proxy for a more knowledgeable maria person than I).
