Description Giancarlo 2008-12-27 20:03:52 UTC
Description of problem:
Fedora 10 can' t reduce the cpu speed on the eeepc 701 ( it work on other linux
distribution, i tested ubuntu and mandriva )
this cause a very fast reduce of the battery ( 1:30 to 2 hours )

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. right click on one of the two gnome panel
2. add applet
3. add the cpu monitor for change-frequence

Actual results:
the applet return error because fedora 10 ( i think also 9, etc.. ) can' t
change the cpu-frequence ( i think that is an powermanger problem )

Expected results:
well, will be nice if fedora fix it just on the fedora 10, so the eeepc can
work 2 hours more... ( the double )

Additional info:
there are a lot of this eeepc 701...
ah, there si nothing about this on the ufficial wiki page: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EeePc

Comment 1 Jarod Wilson 2008-12-30 19:56:15 UTC
This would be a bug in the cpufreq driver in the kernel, not the userspace. Reassigning.

Comment 2 Giancarlo 2008-12-30 22:43:02 UTC
ok, if you need some system log tell me..

Comment 3 Jarod Wilson 2008-12-30 22:55:35 UTC
the output of dmesg after booting w/the added kernel param "cpufreq.debug=7" would probably be useful to start out, unless this is something already known and fixed upstream somewhere...

Comment 4 Giancarlo 2009-01-06 12:12:04 UTC
i add the kernel param, but this don' t reduce the cpu freq when it is not used and will work all time at full speed ( 630Mhz )

where i can get the output of dmesg ?

Comment 5 Jarod Wilson 2009-01-06 15:28:53 UTC
The param isn't designed to change any functionality, just add extra debugging output to the kernel log. You can get a dmesg dump by simply typing "dmesg" at a command prompt after booting up. "dmesg > dmesg.txt" to output it to a text file you can attach here.

I don't see any evidence of acpi-cpufreq ever trying to load, which I believe is the cpufreq driver for these. Do you have the cpuspeed package installed and configured to run on system startup?

# rpm -q cpuspeed
# service cpuspeed status

Comment 8 Giancarlo 2009-01-07 18:57:31 UTC
ok, i have installed now cpuspeed

from the "rpm -q cpuspeed" command return:
cpuspeed-1.5-2.fc10.i386
from the "" command return:
cpuspeed is stopped

the dmseg report is:

Comment 9 Giancarlo 2009-01-08 18:26:18 UTC
i see now that exist the same problem on ubuntu 8.10 LIVE,
but i remember that ubuntu 8.04.1 works fine and also mandriva 2008.1 ( i don' t remember if i tested the 2009 version )

is this a kernel bug?

Comment 10 Giancarlo 2009-01-11 20:32:31 UTC
if can help you i fixed the problem on ubuntu 8.10 with adam's kernel by adding the follow lines at the /etc/modules file:
pciehp pciehp_debug=1 pciehp_force=1
p4_clockmod
lp

found at: http://forum.eeepc.it/viewtopic.php?id=4697&p=1

p.s.: i also found a bug report on other distribution ubuntu-based: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eee/+bug/313747

Comment 11 Clodoaldo Pinto Neto 2009-06-25 20:19:16 UTC
I confirm the bug in Fedora 11.

$ rpm -q cpuspeed
cpuspeed-1.5-8.fc11.i586
$ service cpuspeed status
cpuspeed is stopped
# uname -a
Linux anao 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586 #1 SMP Wed May 27 17:14:37 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

dmesg output in fedora 11

Comment 13 Peter Robinson 2009-08-13 20:17:31 UTC
Clodoaldo, does the cpuspeed service run on startup? You can check it by running the following command and you can see the output you should get below.

[root@neo ~]# chkconfig --list | grep cpu
cpuspeed 0:off	1:on	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off
[root@neo ~]#

If its off for run levels 3-5 you can ensure it starts on startup with the 'chkconfig cpuspeed on'

Comment 14 Clodoaldo Pinto Neto 2009-08-14 10:37:58 UTC
Yes it runs on startup:

$ chkconfig --list | grep cpu
cpuspeed 0:off	1:on	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off

Comment 15 Bug Zapper 2010-04-27 12:38:52 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 11 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 11. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '11'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 11's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 11 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 16 Bug Zapper 2010-06-28 11:02:15 UTC
Fedora 11 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-06-25. Fedora 11 is

security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.
