Description Björn Persson 2013-06-04 19:03:15 UTC
Description of problem:
After a "hotspot connection" has been configured through Gnome's network settings dialog, nm-connection-editor can't be used to change the worthless WEP to a better setting, because nm-connection-editor changes the mode to "Infrastructure" so that the connection isn't a "hotspot" connection anymore. No access point mode is offered in the Mode menu.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
nm-connection-editor-0.9.8.1-4.git20130514.fc19.x86_64

How reproducible:
It seems perfectly repeatable to me.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Testcase_NM_Gnome_Hotspot
2. Run "nm-connection-editor", edit the "Hotspot" connection and change Security to "WPA & WPA2 Personal" or "None". Don't touch Mode. Click Save.
3. nmcli connection up id Hotspot

Actual results:
The interface does not come up, or Network Manager brings up another configured connection. nmcli prints "Error: Timeout 90 sec expired."

"nmcli connection show configured id Hotspot" shows that 802-11-wireless.mode has changed from "ap" to "infrastructure".

Expected results:
The interface should come up in access point mode with the new settings.

Additional info:
The Wifi card is an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230.

Comment 1 Jirka Klimes 2013-06-05 15:04:01 UTC
For the WEP security with Ad-Hoc see e.g.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678287

You are right that AP mode is missing in the editor. And it has a consequence of resetting the mode of the connection to "Infrastructure" when opened with the editor. The patch for this bug follows.

Comment 3 Dan Williams 2013-06-05 15:33:21 UTC
I'd started on this in the dcbw/ap branch, but one missing piece is letting changes on one page change other pages. For example, when in AP mode, the IPv4 page needs to change to only allow Automatic, and the IPv6 mode should be disabled because we don't yet run IPv6 Prefix Delegation and router advertisements on the shared interface. Stuff like that isn't done yet, but should be, since otherwise we'd allow invalid options.

Comment 4 Dan Winship 2013-06-05 15:35:35 UTC
I'd say "Access Point" rather than "AP" in the menu. And can we change "Infrastructure" to "Client"? Also, I'd put ap before adhoc, since it's the more useful one.

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2015-01-09 18:20:08 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will
be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2015-02-17 15:28:11 UTC
Fedora 19 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-01-06. Fedora 19 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 7 Thomas Haller 2015-10-01 12:36:58 UTC
note that there is upstream bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=755663 .

Let's continue discussion there...
